For several years, and even more so since the health crisis, home meal delivery has experienced exponential growth (+20% per year). However, this trend is accompanied by another progression: that of the use of single-use packaging. Indeed, according to the latest official data from Eurostat, Europeans produce +10kg of waste on average per year, or around 200kg of packaging waste per inhabitant in France, above the European average of 187 kg.
We then witness a phenomenon of waste and overpackaging, thus creating harmful impacts on the environment.
It is in this context thatETERNITY Systems signed on February 15 the “Delivered Catering” charter, along with the Ministry of Ecological Transition and 19 other players in restoration, reuse and packaging.
What does the “Delivered Catering Charter” contain?
By signing this charter, ETERNITY Systems and the other players are committed to proposing viable solutions, contributing to the reduction of waste linked to disposable packaging. This charter is structured into 10 commitments, structured around 4 main axes: reuse, reduction, recycling and awareness.
The 10 commitments are:
- The objective of 50% of packaging delivered without single-use plastic by 2022 and 70% by 2023;
- Le banning plastic bags by restaurants for delivery by 1erJanuary 2023;
- The end of the systematic delivery of cutlery and sauces from the 1er March 2021;
- The experiments de local reuse solutions containers and packaging;

- La visibility of virtuous restaurants by the platforms;

What work has been carried out since signing?
Both on the part of the signatories and the Ministry of Ecological Transition, work has been carried out:
- An inventory of reuse practices via a questionnaire intended for all stakeholders;
- The establishment of thematic working groups between the signatories;
- Implementation of reporting in order to identify commitments that are on track and those that need to be intensified.
In addition, a monitoring committee bringing together the signatories and various stakeholders (NGOs, unions, etc.) was set up for bimonthly meetings.
But the takeaway is the interest shown by 15 additional signatories to join the movement and join forces to meet the commitments.
