MAY-A, the reusable sealable plastic tray for mass distribution

Last updated: 12 / 11 / 2025

As part of the next Carrefour des Industriels de l’Agrialimentaire, Europlastiques will present the May-A project, a flash experiment carried out jointly with several partners: Mecapack and ETERNITY Systems as well as Leygatech, Généomat and STTP Emballage. Objective of the May-A project: optimize the design of injected plastic packaging dedicated to a short B to B reuse circuit: choice of materials, resistance and adaptability to the cleaning system, traceability, return to food, resealing multiple… the partners have set themselves the objective of helping to remove the existing obstacles around plastic packaging dedicated to reuse.

MAY-A: AN EXPERIMENT TO COMPLETE THE LOOP

How can we help our customers make the transition to reuse? This questioning is at the origin of the May-A project carried out by the company Europlastiques. A specialist in injected packaging for the food industry, Europlastiques addresses market-leading food industry players. If the reuse model is emerging well for certain sectors, such as collective catering or out-of-home catering, it is more complex to understand in the mass distribution sector. “ We do not yet have a framework on which to base ourselves to address subjects which are essential for us and our customers such as the return to food, the management of health risks, conservation, etc. all of which represent significant obstacles for the development of reuse which we all hope for. We therefore made the choice not to wait for current projects to gain our experience. As in all of our innovation projects, we have decided to act collectively and bring together several partners around this subject, keen as we are to move forward quickly and in “test and learn” mode. » explains Fabien Cabirou, Sales Director of Europlastiques. The points on which the partners worked and which will be presented to the CFIA:

  • A tray designed specifically for reuse: weight, geometry of the part, sealing range, traceability studied in collaboration with the entire chain.
  • A sealing technique which guarantees food conservation and food safety and which offers the possibility of multiple re-sealing.
  • The resistance of packaging in its life cycle: filling, conservation, cleaning

« We performed various tests involving a shared protocol, different material options recommended by Citeo, a defined number of loops…. We study the resistance of the packaging and the lid, overall migration, coloring/discoloration following recipes and simulants used, etc. » specifies Laurent Robin, head of R&D at Europlastiques.
The project team will be present at the CFIA show to share the results of this experiment with manufacturers wishing to get into the loop. A moment of discussion with all the partners will also be organized on Wednesday March 15 at 17 p.m. on the Europlastiques stand.

May-A CFIA

A CIRCULAR MODEL FOR THE GROUP

The May-A project is in line with the trajectory of the Europlastiques Group with a view to integrating its model into circularity.
On the materials side, the group is continuing the Nautilium adventure presented last year. It always investigates materials from advanced recycling through its ISCC+ certification and a partnership to secure its supplies.
On the end-of-life aspect, in addition to the deployment of the group policy on monomaterials and carbon-free dyes, the Group will adopt a new activity this year with a view to capturing as many plastic materials for recycling as it does. places on the market, in a local approach.
In terms of environmental commitments, the Group's entities are continuing their work to control their carbon footprint and that of their products. On this subject, the Europlastiques team will present its new commercial approach based on environmental value.
