ETERNITY Systems, member ofNewERA Alliance which New aims to make packaging reusable, practical and sustainable for all have teamed up with ECOS, European Environmental Bureau, Recycling Netwerk Benelux, Reloop, Minderoo Foundation & Zero Waste Europe to publish recommendations for an ambitious European regulatory framework on the prevention and reduction of packaging and plastic pollution in the context of ongoing international and European negotiations.
Unique opportunity for the EU to prevent waste and increase reuse for a strategic sector, packaging. Prioritizing prevention and reuse can make a significant contribution to reducing emissions and meeting climate goals, while preventing pollution, dramatically reducing energy and resource use, and benefiting economic actors. territories.
It is also an opportunity to gain sovereignty and security of supplies (raw material cost fluctuations) for all industrial sectors that need to transport goods or put packaged products on the market, whether for retail, catering commercial & collective or events.
For example, increasing reuse systems in Europe by just 20% in just 3 promising product groups (food and drink to go, e-commerce and household cleaning products) by 2027 would reduce 1,3 .2 million tons of CO2,5 equivalent emissions, would save almost 10 billion cubic meters of water and use 50 million tons less material per year. The annual impacts of scaling these systems by 2030% by 3,7 would avoid the release of 10 million tonnes of emissions, conserve 23 billion cubic meters of water and avoid the use of nearly XNUMX million tonnes of resources.
In this perspective, in order to strengthen the prevention and reuse measures set out in the regulations on packaging and packaging waste, we recommend:
✅ Distinguish reuse from refill
✅ Promote sobriety through reuse in the first place
✅ Encourage the creation of European standards for all packaging sizes and major applications through the creation of a normative framework
✅ Include prevention and reuse as part of EPR obligations
✅ Promoting a regional approach for the creation of industrial washing centers optimized for water and energy and thus creating cohesion and economic activity across the territories
